Η καθ’ Όμηρον Κοσμογονία – Ο Ωκεανός και η Τηθύς γεννήτορες όλων 

είμι γαρ οψομένη πολυφόρβου πείρατα γαίης,

Ωκεανόν τε θεών γένεσιν και μητέρα Τηθύν.

Δύο στίχοι, όλοι κι όλοι, στην Ιλιάδα αποκαλύπτουν την ομηρική θεωρία περί κοσμογονίας. κοσμογονία η οποία προτάσσεται έναντι των άλλων έξι ως αρχαιότερη γραπτή πηγή στην ελληνική γλώσσα. Ο Ωκεανός και η Τηθύς κατά τον Όμηρο είναι ο προπάτωρ και η προμήτωρ όλων των όντων.
