Maryo is the last grande dame of rebetiko, a true ‘rebetissa’ and one of the most expressive and original representatives of the genre. When asked what brought her to the world of singing, she answers: “the rebetiko song from the gramophone and my father who was a musician”, but also “the Smyrna songs that I heard as a child because my mother sang them”. This is Maryo’s world: the rebetiko song, which she has served consistently for more than half a century.

Όταν την ρωτάνε τι την έφερε στον κόσμο του τραγουδιού, απαντά «το ρεμπέτικο τραγούδι από το γραμμόφωνο και ο πατέρας μου που ήταν μουσικός», αλλά και «τα σμυρνέϊκα που τα άκουγα από την κούνια μου γιατί τα τραγούδαγε η μάνα μου». Αυτός είναι ο κόσμος της Μαριώς: το ρεμπέτικο τραγούδι, με αφετηρία πάντα τη Θεσσαλονίκη. Και η ίδια το υπηρετεί με συνέπεια για περισσότερο από μισό αιώνα.
