Παρά το γεγονός ότι τα έργα του δίνουν την εντύπωση ότι αποτυπώνουν ρεαλιστικές ψυχρές εικόνες από την εποχή του, ο Έντουαρντ Χόπερ κατορθώνει να συνθέσει κάτι άλλο: Ένα “υπερπραγματικό” σκηνικό όπου μια ποιητική, ίσως μυστηριακή, ατμόσφαιρα περιβάλει τις ανθρώπινες μορφές που χαρακτηρίζονται από έντονη εσωτερικότητα και προκαλούν -για τα “κρυμμένα” συναισθήματά τους- έντονη συγκίνηση στους θεατές.

Γεννήθηκε στις 22 Ιουλίου του 1822.
