Στήριξε τη συμμετοχή των γάλλων σοσιαλιστών στην κυβέρνηση της Τρίτης Δημοκρατίας αλλά είχε το θάρρος να αναγνωρίσει το τεράστιο λάθος. Μπρος στα κανόνια του Α’ Παγκ. Πολέμου ο Ζαν Ζωρές, πατέρας της εφημεριδας Ουμανιτέ και αδιαμφισβήτητος ηγέτης του Γαλλικού Σοσιαλιστικού Κόμματος, κάλεσε τους προλετάριους να μην πάρουν όπλο στα χέρια. Ένα όπλο θα κόψει το νήμα της ζωής του, στις 31 Ιουλίου του 1914.
