Την εποχή εκείνη, η σχέση μεταξύ Πίστης και Λογικής δεν ήταν και τόσο αρμονική. Όσοι ακολουθούσαν το δόγμα της Εκκλησίας πίστευαν πως μόνο η πίστη μπορεί να αποκαλύψει την αλήθεια, ενώ αντίθετα όσοι ασπάζονταν ένα πιο ελεύθερο δόγμα, πίστευαν πως τον ρόλο αυτόν τον έχει αποκλειστικά η λογική. Η κόντρα αυτή αποτελούσε ένα από τα πιο σημαντικά ζητήματα του μεσαίωνα. Ο λάτρης του Αριστοτέλη, Θωμάς Ακινάτης, έζησε μια ολόκληρη ζωή προσπαθώντας να συνθέσει τους δύο κόσμους. Μέχρι την ημέρα που πέθανε, στις 7 Μαρτίου 1274.
